Is this a good rod that you are making for your back?

Had a visitor recently and her three under ten kids always cleaned their plates from the table after a meal. They didn’t have to be reminded. It was an ingrained habit.

This mum had made good rod for her own back. It would have taken quite a bit of early training. Sometimes we make bad rods (habits) for our own backs, such as when we do too much, let kids off lightly when they throw tantrums to get their own way or even let them talk back to us too often.

We make many rods for our own backs as parents. We just want to make sure that we make good ones, rather than bad ones. It’s harder in the short term to develop good rods (habits) but easier in the long-term as the mum who visited me is discovering.
