The place matters when you talk

If you want to be heard by your kids think carefully where you deliver your message.
If you want to talk to your kids about their day at school make sure you set up the right space to get them talking. My mum was smart. When I came home from school she always placed two or three pieces of bread and jam & a drink on the kitchen table.
She used to choose this time to have an afternoon cuppa. And she quietly probe about school. Years later she revealed that this was her little trick to get me talking.
As a speaker there are certain venues I find difficult. Running a parenting seminar in a church is one hard place to get people talking. Churches are for worship, not for chatting. Some places promote talk and others are good for listening.
Some places are full of distractions, making listening impossible. Lounges with TV's fit that category.
Pay attention to the place when you want kids to listen or talk. Choose well because it will make a huge difference.
