Loving your child helplessly

I just passed a mother carrying her child’s bag to school. She no doubt loves her, but she loves her helplessly.

Maybe she could take some of the load, if she is worried about her developing back problems, but her daughter could still carry her bag.

Just read about new AFL club South Western Sydney Giants house their new recruits together. These are teenage boys living away from home for the first time.

It seems the welfare officer in charge has to balance independence-giving with high levels of support. Wants the boys to stand on their own two feet, but also have someone looking out for them.

It’s a fine balance, that they seem to be getting right out west. For instance, the young men fax off their weekly breakfast requirements at the start of the week.

Someone fills the shopping list, but after that they are on their own. They get their own breakfasts. These boys are cared for (loved) but not so much that they'll become helpless or reliant on others. How are you loving your child?
